Just as computers require software to run, a Blu-ray player requires firmware to operate smoothly. If you are having issues with playback on a Blu-ray disc please ensure you have the latest firmware installed. Please visit the manufacture website of your Blu-ray player for further details.
When a DVD disc is manufactured, a region code is applied at the authoring stage such that the final disc will play only on those players distributed in the designated world region. There are 6 regions throughout the world: - Region 1 - Canada, United States and its Territories - Region 2 - Japan, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East - Region 3 - Southeast Asia and East Asia - Region 4 - Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Central and South America - Region 5 - Indian Subcontinent, Former Soviet Union and Africa - Region 6 - China.
Blu-ray Discs may be encoded with a region code, intended to restrict the area of the world in which they can be played, similar in principle to the DVD Region Info, although the used geographical regions differ.
Region A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, North America, South America and their dependencies. Region B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia and Kazakhstan), Oceania and their dependencies. Region C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia and their dependencies.
Not all Blu-ray discs are region encoded. Some releases can be viewed on any player. These are usually known as region-free (or "region 0"). Packaging may vary within a region though the pressing of the disc may be identical. In addition to the region code your Blu-ray player is capable of playing, your television needs to be able to handle the color system standards. Blu-ray discs are designed to be displayed on either PAL (Europe, Australia) or NTSC (US, Japan) televisions. Most newer televisions can handle both PAL and NTSC color systems. Please ensure your television can handle the format of the Blu-ray before purchasing.
